Choosing the Right CNC Router: Types, Features & Applications

There are many types of CNC routers, and many furniture manufacturers don’t know how to choose the right machine for their products when buying one. This article will clearly explain the features and applications of different CNC routers to help you understand the differences and make the right choice.

1. 3 Axis CNC Router

Working principle:

A 3-axis CNC router is the most common type. It uses one spindle working together with three linear axes: X, Y, and Z. It can perform processes such as engraving, drilling, 2D cutting, and simple 3D cutting. The X-axis moves left and right, the Y-axis moves forward and backward, and the Z-axis moves up and down. The work piece stays fixed, and the tool moves to complete shallow 3D machining. However, it cannot handle complex curved surfaces that require the cutting tool to tilt.

2. 4 Axis CNC Router

Working Principle:

A 4-axis CNC router is an upgraded version of a 3-axis machine. Based on the X, Y, and Z axes, it adds an A axis, which allows the spindle to tilt and rotate ±90° around the A axis. This makes it possible to carve the workpiece from different angles and process curved surfaces. It is more suitable for 3D carving and machining complex parts.

3. Rotary Axis CNC Router

Working Principle:

A rotary axis CNC router machine is a type of 4-axis CNC router machine. It has X, Y, Z, and A axes (the A axis is the rotary axis). The A axis allows the workpiece to rotate during machining. There are custom rotary axis machines, and you can also add a rotary axis to a standard CNC machine to carve cylindrical shapes.

Main Features:

Compared with a 3-axis CNC router, a rotary axis CNC router adds one rotating axis. It can handle both flat surface cutting and cylindrical (round) surface carving.

Suitable For:

A rotary axis CNC router is mainly used for processing round or cylindrical workpieces. Typical applications include table legs, chair legs, stair handrails, Roman columns, small Buddha statues, and human figure sculptures. If you produce furniture or office furniture and have specific needs for cylindrical parts, a rotary axis CNC router is the right choice.

4. 5 Axis CNC Router

Working Principle:

A 5-axis CNC router adds two rotary axes based on the X, Y, and Z axes. These two rotary axes allow the cutting tool to rotate at almost any angle in the air, making it possible to machine the workpiece from different directions. If a 3-axis machine is like a person’s shoulders that can move in three directions, then a 5-axis machine is like adding elbows and wrists. This allows the tool to easily reach every position of the workpiece.

5. ATC CNC Router

Working Principle:

An ATC (Automatic Tool Change) CNC router is built on a standard 3-axis or 4-axis CNC router but adds an automatic tool magazine for automatic tool changes. The tool magazine can be either linear (straight row) type or disc (rotary) type. Each tool has a different function, such as cutting, engraving, milling, or drilling. The automatic tool magazine allows the machine to perform multiple types of machining in one setup without manual tool changes, greatly improving efficiency. It is especially suitable for batch production of panel furniture.

6. Hobby CNC Router

Working Principle:

A hobby CNC router is a small-sized CNC router machine, also called an advertising CNC router. Its working principle is similar to a standard 3-axis CNC router, using the X, Y, and Z linear axes together with a spindle to perform machining. The main difference is that a hobby CNC router is compact and has a limited working area. It uses a lead screw drive system, which ensures relatively stable machining accuracy.

7. Multi-head CNC Router

Working Principle:

A multi-head CNC router usually has two or more spindles. Each spindle is mounted on the same gantry and is controlled by the system to move synchronously during machining. The machine can process multiple identical workpieces at the same time or create repeated patterns on the same board. The tool paths are synchronized, allowing for highly efficient batch production.

8. Mold Making CNC Router

Working Principle:

Mold making CNC routers are usually used for 3D carving of large or medium-sized molds. Most high-precision mold routers use a five-axis structure, which allows them to machine complex curved surfaces. They are commonly used to make wooden molds, boat models, and foam molds.

9. Stone CNC Router

Working Principle:

The working principle of a stone CNC router machine is similar to other CNC routers. It uses three linear axes (X, Y, and Z) to control tool movement. Four-axis models add a rotary axis for more complex work. The machine cuts or engraves the material by moving the cutting tool along these axes.

The main difference between other CNC routers is that stone is much harder than wood or plastic. Because of this, stone CNC router machines use diamond tools or carbide tools, and they are equipped with cooling and chip removal systems.

Stone CNC router machines are available in both 3-axis and 4-axis types. 3-axis stone engraving machines are used for simple relief carving and flat surface processing. 4-axis stone engraving machines are suitable for complex 3D stone carving or column-shaped work.

10. Nest Based CNC Router

Working Principle:

The CNC nesting machine completes cutting, grooving, and drilling of panels under the control of a computer program. Operators first set up the cutting paths in the software, generate the program, and load it into the machine.

When the machine starts, the X, Y, and Z axes follow the programmed paths to process the panels. The vacuum table holds the panels firmly in place, allowing multiple operations to be completed in a single setup, reducing manual work and greatly improving the production efficiency of panel furniture.
