Essential CNC Machine Preventative Maintenance Checklist

Why Preventative Maintenance Matters

Daily Care Checklist

  1. Verify hydraulic fluid and liquid levels; confirm hydraulic pressure meets operational requirements.
  2. Grease all chucks and confirm pressure for a proper fit.
  3. Check lubricant and coolant levels; top up as needed.
  4. Remove chips and wipe down all accessible surfaces to maintain cleanliness.
  5. Visually inspect each tool for damage or excessive wear.
  6. Lubricate parts per manufacturer’s guidelines.
  7. Clear immediate operating areas to ensure safe movement for operators.
  8. Inspect filters and replace or clean any that are heavily contaminated.
  9. Review the manufacturer’s maintenance guidebook to confirm compliance.

Every 90 Days or 500 Hours of Operation

  1. Check and grease chip conveyors and other drive systems.
  2. Inspect chucks and tool mounts for wear.
  3. Re‑confirm compliance with the manufacturer’s maintenance guidebook.

Every 6 Months or 1,000 Hours of Operation

  1. Clean the coolant tank to remove sludge and debris.
  2. Remove chucks and jaws for a thorough cleaning.
  3. Replace hydraulic fluid and filters.
  4. Drain and replace lubricant fluids.
  5. Drain and replace coolants.
  6. Verify machine leveling and adjust if necessary.
  7. Confirm adherence to the manufacturer’s maintenance guidebook.
  8. Contact your local CNC dealer or service center for repairs or upgrades.

Annually or 2,000 Hours of Operation

Schedule a certified service technician to perform the following inspections:

  1. Check headstock taper for alignment.
  2. Verify spindle radial and end play.
  3. Assess chuck cylinder run‑out.
  4. Inspect tailstock taper.
  5. Test turret parallelism and inclination.
  6. Run a backlash program to measure X and Z axis backlash.
  7. Examine X and Z axis gibs for wear.
