Tata Expands Reach in Industrial Internet of Things

India‑headquartered conglomerate Tata is poised to deepen its presence in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) market, The Financial Express reports.

Alok Bardiya, head of the IoT Business Unit at Tata Communications, provided insights into the company’s strategy.

This expansion aligns with Tata’s upcoming entry into semiconductor manufacturing, aiming to capture market share from East Asian fabrication houses that were severely disrupted by the pandemic.

India’s software engineering prowess and higher AI skill penetration—surpassing the U.S. and China, according to Stanford University’s AI Index—position the country well for this venture.

Tata’s roadmap includes greenfield facilities in India’s special economic zones (SEZs), which offer state incentives to attract private investment. Connected technologies will enable SEZ clients to monitor energy, water, and gas consumption efficiently.

Additional applications such as vehicle tracking and accident prevention are envisioned, with the core infrastructure designed to deliver connected services that benefit local communities.

As global demand shifts toward Software‑as‑a‑Service solutions, Tata believes its domestic manufacturing ecosystem can capitalize by offering integrated IIoT solutions that combine custom chips with tailored software and deep expertise.

Regarding IoT software tools, Bardiya expects customers to prioritize capabilities like predictive analytics and intelligent forecasting.
