Professional Finishing Processes for Parts & Components

We are continuing our series highlighting different types of finishing processes that may be used during the contract manufacturing and/or prototypes to production manufacturing process. Our previous articles covered chemical plating, bead blasting, electroplating, case hardening, burnishing, and black oxide. Let’s take a look at a few more:

Thread Rolling

Thread rolling is used to create a threaded component or part.  While threads may also be produced during the precision CNC machining process, some materials are better suited to undergo thread rolling finishing instead.

Barrel Tumbling

Barrel tumbling involves tumbling materials (i.e. ceramics, plastics, metals, etc.) in a rotating barrel to essentially “burnish” or mirror finish the parts or components.  Barrel tumbling also helps polish the parts and remove any excess material that was left behind during the precision CNC machining process.

Anodizing

When the oxide layer of a part or component needs to be thickened, anodizing is one of the preferred methods of choice.  Increasing the thickness of the oxide layer also enhances wear and corrosion resistance.
