The Four Core Types of Steel Explained

The Four Core Types of Steel
Steel—a versatile alloy of iron and carbon—can be categorized into four primary families. Each family is further divided into grades that fine‑tune its properties for specific applications.
1. Carbon Steels
Accounting for roughly 90 % of global steel production, carbon steels contain up to 2 % carbon. They are split into three sub‑categories:
- Low‑carbon (mild) steel – ≤ 0.25 % C, ideal for structural frameworks.
- Medium‑carbon steel – 0.25 % – 0.60 % C, balances strength and ductility.
- High‑carbon steel – 0.60 % – 1.00 % C, used in cutting tools and high‑wear components.
In everyday terminology, “carbon steel” refers to any non‑stainless steel.
2. Alloy Steels
By introducing elements such as chromium, nickel, copper, molybdenum, vanadium, and aluminum, alloy steels modify key attributes: ductility, strength, machinability, and corrosion resistance. These additions can constitute up to 50 % of the alloy’s mass.
3. Stainless Steels
Stainless steel owes its corrosion‑resistant reputation to a minimum of 10.5 % chromium, with most commercial grades containing 11–12 % chromium. The metallic sheen and excellent resistance to oxidizing environments make stainless steel the material of choice for the food, medical, and architectural sectors.
4. Tool Steels
Designed for high‑temperature and high‑wear applications, tool steels incorporate alloys like tungsten, molybdenum, cobalt, and vanadium. Six principal grades exist:
- Air‑hardening
- Water‑hardening
- D‑type
- Hot‑working
- Shock‑resisting
- Oil‑hardening
These grades provide the heat resistance and hardness required for cutting and drilling equipment.
