How to Select the Ideal Robotic Welding System

How to Select the Ideal Robotic Welding System

If you want to automate robotic welding processes in your facility, there are a number of options available to you. More than likely, a robotic systems integrator will determine what equipment is needed to automate your welding operations, but knowing your options can help make the process quicker and easier, and ensure you get the best system for your application.

With that in mind, it’s vitally important to get the right robotic welding system for your facility, otherwise you won’t see the return on investment you’re looking for and production capabilities may be hindered.

3 Considerations for Robotic Welding Systems

When automating welding processes, there are a few different components to consider in relation to your specific welding needs.

1. Intelligence and Communication

Robot controllers for tooling and motion and system controllers for parts movement, environmental communication and human-machine interface (HMI) are all crucial aspects of a robotic welding system. Data acquisition, for example, can vary greatly between systems, depending on what type of information is needed.

2. Workcell Features

The parts you’re welding will largely determine what type of workcell features you need. They could be stationary tables, turntables, fixtures, positioners or shields, depending on the size, weight, production volume and accessibility of your part. Extremely large parts will need extensive positioning and fixturing, while smaller parts the robot can easily reach will require fewer workcell features.

3. Welding Robot Features

Of course, choosing the right robot, workcell and software is important, but it’s also important to understand the details of your welding process requirements. You may need MIG, GMAW or laser welding. Your application will determine the type of consumables and metal filler, wire feeding and contact tip you need too. Getting the details right is key to the whole system functioning at peak performance.

While a robotic systems integrator will be able to determine exactly what type of welding robot equipment you need for automation, it can be beneficial to understand the basics yourself to ensure you get the best system for your application.
