Mastering Cloud Application Monitoring: Insights for IT Leaders

We recently launched AppNeta Performance Manager, and while the buzz around it is undeniable, what truly sets it apart is its comprehensive cloud application monitoring capabilities. It’s designed for the phase after cloud adoption—when you need granular visibility into application health and user experience across the cloud ecosystem.

With the industry’s rapid shift to cloud, visibility into infrastructure is becoming a critical bottleneck. Gartner projects that this migration will add up to an aggregate $216 billion in IT spend by 2020, underscoring the scale of the challenge. As organizations disperse workloads, traditional device‑centric monitoring tools simply can’t deliver the contextual data required to keep performance in check.

How Does Cloud Monitoring Work, Exactly?

AppNeta Performance Manager’s architecture blends data collection, analysis, and actionable reporting into a single, cohesive solution. It captures application performance from multiple angles—end‑user experience, network delivery, and application usage—so IT teams have a 360° view of their cloud environment.

Data collection starts with strategically placed physical or virtual monitoring points at key locations—typically where your users reside. These points harvest packet data via span port or inline capture, identifying the applications in transit. Because performance can vary dramatically by geography, measuring the end‑user experience from each critical location is essential. The system then actively probes Wi‑Fi and Internet connections to those services, delivering real‑time network and application metrics.

Once configured, monitoring points transmit data to AppNeta’s analysis service, hosted in either a public or private cloud, depending on your compliance requirements. This architecture ensures low latency and high scalability for large‑scale deployments.

How Does AppNeta’s Technology Deliver Monitoring?

Performance Manager comprises three core components—Experience, Delivery, and Usage—that together provide the full performance picture for cloud and SaaS workloads.

What Your End User Sees

The Experience module leverages periodic synthetic scripting, built on the industry‑standard Selenium language, to replicate user interactions from global points. By deploying monitoring points in your office, you can also gauge performance behind the firewall and over Wi‑Fi. When a page fails, the tool captures exactly what the user saw, complete with custom milestone markers that quantify data load times even in complex single‑page applications.

What’s Happening on Any Network

The Delivery component continuously monitors the application delivery path across the network. Using TruPath technology, it identifies more than 80 common network issues, displaying symptoms and a confidence score that indicates the likelihood of each root cause. The system maps the hop‑by‑hop path for TCP, UDP, or ICMP traffic, allowing you to pinpoint latency spikes or packet loss at a specific IP address—critical when escalating incidents to ISPs.

Which Apps Are Deployed

The Usage module offers real‑time visibility into every application in use across your network. With a built‑in catalog of over 1,500 applications automatically identified and categorized, you can also add custom apps or reclassify them from recreational to business‑critical. Interactive charts and graphs make it straightforward to isolate the culprit behind reported slowdowns—often a high‑bandwidth service like video streaming.

In short, cloud application monitoring is a blend of sophisticated technology and skilled personnel. AppNeta Performance Manager equips IT leaders with the insights and tools needed to maintain optimal performance in today’s complex, distributed environments.
