Renesas Chips Power Nissan's New Skyline ProPILOT 2.0 Driver Assistance System

Renesas Electronics announced that Nissan Motor has integrated Renesas’ cutting‑edge automotive technology into the ProPILOT 2.0 system of the new Nissan Skyline. The driver‑assist solution blends navigated highway driving with hands‑free, single‑lane control, leveraging Renesas’ R‑Car automotive system‑on‑chip (SoC) and RH850 automotive microcontroller to deliver core decision‑making and actuation within the vehicle’s electronic control units (ECUs).

ProPILOT 2.0 is engineered for ramp‑to‑ramp highway travel. It synchronizes with the vehicle’s navigation system to follow a predefined route across designated roads. For the first time, the system also supports hands‑free driving while maintaining a single lane.

The R‑Car SoC constructs precise environmental maps by fusing data from cameras, front radar, and high‑resolution 3D navigation maps. It localises the vehicle, processes lane information, and formulates an action plan. The RH850 MCU then transmits control commands to ECUs—steering, throttle, brakes—ensuring real‑time responsiveness and reliability. The synergy between the R‑Car SoC’s high‑performance computing and the RH850’s deterministic control enables seamless, accurate judgment and actuation, underpinning the success of Nissan’s ProPILOT 2.0.
