Assessing Your Industrial IoT Readiness: Are You Ready for Industry 4.0 Success?

Manufacturing leaders worldwide view IIoT, or Industry 4.0, as a catalyst for operational excellence. By integrating smart sensors, analytics, and end‑to‑end visibility, they can lift overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), streamline processes, cut waste, and accelerate time‑to‑market for new products.

In practice, however, the journey is fraught with hurdles. A recent Connected Futures podcast highlighted that roughly 60 % of initiatives stall at the proof‑of‑concept stage, and only 26 % of companies rate their deployments as successful. IDC projects that IoT endpoints will climb from 14.9 billion today to over 82 billion by 2025¹.

Avoiding the pitfalls

What can derail a project? My colleague Scot Wlodarczak distilled the answers in RFID Journal’s “Don’t Let Your Industrial Internet of Things Project Fail.” The seven pillars of success are:

• Start small: Launch in a focused, high‑impact area instead of the entire plant.
• Define success: Clarify objectives and benchmark metrics before and after deployment.
• Align IT and operations: Collaboration is essential; isolated network initiatives rarely succeed.
• Address security early: Evaluate risks of data flows from the factory to the enterprise and implement robust safeguards.
• Integrate disparate networks: Map every network layer and capture the data you need for insight.
• Prevent data overload: Keep data sets manageable and use simple statistical checks to spot anomalies.
• Build an IoT‑savvy culture: Success hinges on technology, expertise, and partnerships that translate digital promise into tangible value.
