GE Appliances Unveils Smart, Industry 4.0‑Enabled Refrigeration Plant in Decatur, Alabama

GE Appliances has officially completed a $125 million upgrade of its Decatur, Alabama refrigeration plant, integrating full Industry 4.0 capabilities such as data‑visualization dashboards, 3D scanning, rapid prototyping, and comprehensive smart automation.

The investment has lifted production capacity by 25 percent and positioned the facility to meet 2022 refrigerant regulation changes ahead of schedule. It also created 255 new jobs, bringing total employment at the site to 1,300.

“Decatur is a prime example of how we infuse digitization and cutting‑edge technologies to enhance safety, quality, and manufacturing efficiency across our nine U.S. factories,” said Bill Good, GE Appliances’ Vice President of Supply Chain. “With remote monitoring, we can identify and resolve issues instantly, keeping production on track and exceeding customer expectations for speed and reliability.”

The plant now utilizes auto‑guided vehicles (AGVs) to transport materials, minimizing damage and eliminating ergonomic risks. More than 50 robots handle heavy lifting, repetitive tasks, and precision operations, while a redesigned common‑product architecture allows rapid reconfiguration for various refrigerator sizes.

GE Appliances has prioritized workforce development, partnering with the Alabama Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (ALFAME) and local suppliers to deliver specialized training in hydraulics, programmable logic controllers, and advanced manufacturing equipment operation.

“The company’s generous investment transformed this 42‑year‑old facility into a manufacturing center of excellence for top‑freezer refrigerators,” said Renee Story, Plant Executive Director. “Adding technology and increased capacity has elevated our team’s performance to the next level.”
