Why Telia Chose Neo4j Graph Database for Its Smart Home Ecosystem

Why Telia Chose Neo4j Graph Database for Its Smart Home Ecosystem

Rickard Damm, founder and head of Telia Zone, explains the vision behind Telia’s new broadband‑enabled services platform.

Telia remains the largest telecommunications provider in the Nordic region, yet the growing ubiquity of internet access forces a pivot toward added value for customers. To secure its leadership position, Telia introduced Telia Zone, a broadband‑centric network that lays the groundwork for a digital home ecosystem aimed at 1.2 million users. Central to this strategy is graph‑powered smart‑home management, as Damm notes.

Current offerings include CoPlay, a song‑list builder; the If This Then That notification engine; Glue smart locks; Manetos heating control; and SvD, a leading local news publisher. Because Telia Zone updates are pushed directly to existing routers, subscribers can access these services immediately.

Telia is negotiating freemium partnerships with pay‑wall services such as music streaming and news. Introducing well‑known brands is expected to attract additional providers, with a short‑term goal of ten connected services. The long‑term ambition is to join the ecosystem giants—Apple, Google, and Amazon—while delivering a suite of engaging, broadband‑delivered consumer digital experiences.

Future home‑owners will benefit from automated detection of occupants, programmable heating and lighting rules, and personalized music cues—such as playing a child’s favourite track when they return from school.

Telia Zone represents the foundation of a future smart‑home system that will begin with VOD and home entertainment. According to Damm, the platform offers a first‑of‑its‑kind level of connectivity, filling a gap for broadband subscribers who largely rely on TV services but have seen little router‑based innovation.

To address this, Telia developed the Premium Zone Platform—an infrastructure that allows Wi‑Fi‑based services to thrive and deliver an enhanced user experience.

At the core of this platform is a suite of wireless‑delivered cloud APIs that provide service partners with real‑time data on user presence, event triggers, device context, and authentication. The API architecture is built on the Neo4j graph database, chosen for its ability to model complex relationships efficiently.

Why Graph?

Telia Zone’s backend relies on Neo4j to store APIs as relationships between events and data types. With an anticipated 13 million device nodes and 20–30 k events per second, the network represents a substantial IoT ecosystem that demands scalable graph modeling.

Graph databases excel in flexibility; Neo4j can create new connections on the fly, allowing Telia to expand its API offerings without overhauling the underlying schema.

Graph analytics power Telia Zone’s data insights: routers serve as nodes, apps form edges, and additional devices or locations provide broader context. Predictive models can anticipate when paired devices enter the same zone or when a subscriber is likely to arrive home.

Moreover, Neo4j’s open architecture supports future AI and machine‑learning initiatives, ensuring Telia Zone remains adaptable as technology evolves.
