SMEs Can Accelerate IoT Innovation: Nine Proven Models Revealed in New White Paper

A new report from industry analysts IoT Analytics GmbH outlines how small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can identify the right digitalisation model. With the explosion of IoT‑based solutions, Jeremy Cowan explains that the authors aim to guide SMEs through the complexities of the Internet of Things.

Based in Hamburg, Germany, IoT Analytics delivers market insights and industry intelligence for the IoT ecosystem. Sponsored by Next Big Thing AG, a Berlin‑based IoT company builder, the 36‑page report is now freely available.

Authored by Knud Lasse Lueth, Dirk Glienke, and Zaña Diaz Williams, the Guide to Internet of Things (IoT) Innovation compares a range of digitalisation models, incorporates survey findings from more than 50 SME decision‑makers across Europe, and highlights current IoT use cases.

“IoT solutions are designed to revolutionise how we do business,” the authors note. “Digitised processes, products and services unlock new efficiencies and create entirely new revenue opportunities. To remain competitive, companies must embrace these trends.”

SMEs Can Accelerate IoT Innovation: Nine Proven Models Revealed in New White Paper

“While large multinationals typically have the resources to develop digital and IoT solutions, SMEs often lack equivalent capacity,” the report observes. “Nonetheless, SMEs have a wealth of external innovation options, from corporate ventures and company builders to accelerators.”

Nine Development Models

The white paper presents nine distinct pathways for SMEs to explore and create IoT solutions:

  1. Third‑party full‑service provider
  2. Corporate ventures
  3. Company builder / agency (co‑creation / co‑development)
  4. Strategic partnerships
  5. Incubators / accelerators
  6. Innovation labs / spin‑off programs
  7. Direct start‑up engagement (co‑creation / co‑development)
  8. Ecosystem innovation (consortia / academics)
  9. Open innovation / hackathon

The report identifies that IoT is spurring new innovation models, yet talent and expertise gaps are still limiting progress. Only 52% of respondents are focusing on developing new service‑based business models, while 70% are using IoT to enhance existing products—an observation that raises concerns about linear innovation focus in the age of disruption.

SMEs also seem to lack a comprehensive IoT vision. To address this, the paper offers six key take‑aways for SMEs to incorporate into their strategy.

Sponsored by Next Big Thing AG, a Berlin‑based IoT company builder that accelerates IoT ventures, the white paper promotes digital transformation across Europe. NBG provides access to a network of investors, start‑ups, corporate partners, hardware and software engineers, and technology providers.

Since its launch in August 2016, Next Big Thing has developed IoT ventures in energy, property/facility management, and assisted living, while building its own tech stack in blockchain and secure hardware.
