UK Government Launches £20M AI Fund to Boost Public Services and Tech Growth

UK Government Launches £20M AI Fund to Boost Public Services and Tech Growth

UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced a new £20 million fund to help public services harness UK expertise in cutting‑edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). The investment reflects the government’s commitment to placing AI at the core of its Industrial Strategy.

Earlier this week, May met leading digital entrepreneurs and innovators across the UK to unveil a package aimed at sustaining the country’s tech momentum and reinforcing its status as a world‑class innovation hub.

Key components of the package include:

“The tech sector makes an immense contribution to our economy and society, and it has the full backing of government,” May said. “Technology sits at the heart of our Industrial Strategy, and we will continue to invest in the best innovations, talent, and digital infrastructure. As we leave the EU, I am clear that Britain will remain open for business.”

Tech Nation Hub Expansion

The new funding will allow Tech Nation to broaden its hub model to cities such as Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Building on regional clusters, the network will support up to 40,000 entrepreneurs and 4,000 start‑ups.

A new GovTech challenge fund will incentivise UK firms to develop technology solutions for public‑sector challenges, while a dedicated team will act as a front door into Whitehall, connecting tech companies to the right government departments.

In response to broadband rollout concerns, the government has launched a £2 million pilot voucher scheme in six areas. Local suppliers will offer vouchers to pay for full‑fibre gigabit connections, advancing the pledge to deliver the fastest, most reliable broadband nationwide.

Students can also apply for a £4,000 annual apprenticeship and university bursary from the National Cyber Security Centre, part of the government’s investment in the next generation of cyber‑security specialists and tech innovators.

Sherry Coutu, chair of Founders4Schools and The Scaleup Institute, welcomed the measures: “The digital tech sector is a key pillar of the UK’s competitive edge, and these initiatives will help small and medium‑sized businesses and third‑sector organisations scale up.”

Eileen Burbidge, chair of Tech City UK, added: “We are delighted that the government will increase funding for the next four years. Under the Tech Nation banner, the UK will continue to be recognised as one of the best places to start or grow a digital tech business.”

Robin Duke‑Woolley, CEO of Beecham Research, cautioned: “While welcome, the initiative must go further to nurture national tech champions that remain in the UK.”
