Accelerating Digital Transformation: Cisco & IBM’s Edge‑to‑Cloud IoT Platform
IBM and Cisco announced a global partnership a year ago to bring real‑time business insights to the network edge through IoT. Since then, the alliance has enabled enterprises across industries to harness the combined power of IBM Watson IoT in the cloud and Cisco Kinetic, our industrial IoT data‑management platform, unlocking maximum value from data wherever it resides.
Over the past year we completed the integration of Cisco Kinetic with IBM Watson IoT, delivering unprecedented edge capabilities. IBM’s Global Services and Cisco’s IoT group have long focused on redesigning customer experiences, creating new value streams, and driving efficiencies through digital transformation. By fusing Cisco’s edge and fog strengths with IBM’s cloud analytics, we now provide a holistic IoT data service that modernizes operations and fuels growth.
Resulting in an end‑to‑end intelligent platform, businesses can extract, compute, and move data to deliver peak value—whether at the edge, on‑premise, or in the cloud. Together, we offer a first‑of‑its‑kind solution that lets customers analyze performance at the point of data collection, enabling precise monitoring and control of environments, assets, and people against strategic goals.
Enabling the “World’s Smartest Port”
The Port of Rotterdam—Europe’s largest port by cargo tonnage—has embraced IoT and advanced analytics to overhaul its operational ecosystem and boost efficiencies. IBM and Cisco are partnering to support the port’s 2030 vision of autonomous ships while delivering the IoT data services that drive higher efficiency and revenue for its clients.
With more than 140,000 ships handled annually, coordinating berthing is a highly complex task involving thousands of data points from multiple stakeholders. Weather and water metrics—wind, visibility, tide height, tidal stream—are collected to determine optimal, safe berth timing and conditions.

Additional value comes from calculating ship clearance heights. By maximizing clearance, the port can increase vessel capacity, substantially boosting revenue per arrival.
Future analytics will also advise ships on the most environmentally friendly entry conditions, reducing fuel consumption and lowering the port’s CO₂ footprint.
The synergy of Cisco Kinetic, Cisco industrial IoT routers/gateways, and IBM Watson IoT equips the Port of Rotterdam with comprehensive end‑to‑end IoT data services that drive this transformation.
Key capabilities include:
- Secure authentication and management of Cisco gateways
- Edge intelligence applied at data generation points to enable real‑time decisions
- Automated sensor connectivity, deployment, and management
- Streamlined data extraction, processing, and delivery
- Cloud analytics, data visualisation, and actionable insights
Delivering the right data to the right applications at the right time is critical for operations like the Port of Rotterdam to transform how they run. With IBM Watson IoT and Cisco Kinetic, we hand full control of IoT data to our customers, empowering them to achieve better business outcomes than ever before.
Building on the success at Rotterdam, IBM and Cisco continue to tackle IoT challenges worldwide, turning raw data into business gold.
