Three Essential Automation Strategies for Modern Manufacturing

Automation utilises systems and data in processes to achieve goals. Manufacturing Global examines the three key uses of automation within manufacturing...

Whether you are moving towards a fixed automated process with Computer Integrated Manufacturing, or are looking to incorporate some aspects of fixed programming within your existing system, there are three key uses which automation can bring.

1. Increase Efficiency & Output

One of the most obvious uses is to increase efficiency. By utilising systems and automation technologies to view the manufacturing process, improvements to the process which ultimately increase the efficiency. This can be as simple as automating a simple step with the manufacturing process, a robotic arm would be able to complete this task quicker than humanly possible, therefore the efficiency of that section would increase.

One of the best ways to ensure the best possible efficiency within a move to a computer-operated system is to ensure that the systems are all designed with each other in mind. Designing them one at a time and hoping that they will work cohesively gives a larger opportunity for error.

2.Boost Quality

By utilising automatic processes, the system can maintain as little variation as possible over a large scale, increasing the overall quality of the product. As with the previous point, with less room for human error, automation will result in a uniformity of the product. This standard, when replicated efficiently, will increase the quality of the manufactured product.

3. Increase Safety

Risk management is a big factor when it comes to automated systems. As with the previous two points, automation allows for an opportunity to remove human error from the production line. This in turn, can increase the safety of the process by removing the risk associated with some portions of the line.
