Essential Workshop Tools: A Comprehensive Guide

This can be, for example, to drive nails into wood, to shape metal (as with a forge), or to crush rock. Hammers are used for a wide range of driving, shaping, and breaking applications. Types of Hammers-

• Claw Hammer. 
•  Ball Pein. 
• Cross and Straight Pein (or Cross Pein Pin) 
• Club Hammer.
• Sledgehammer.

Chisel- A chisel is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge (such that wood chisels have lent part of their name to a particular grind) of blade on its end, for carving or cutting a hard material such as wood, stone, or metal by hand, struck with a mallet, or mechanical power. Files-  A file is a tool used to remove fine amounts of material from a workpiece. It is common in woodworking, metalworking, and other similar trade and hobby tasks. Most are hand tools, made of a case hardened steel bar of rectangular, square, triangular, or round cross-section, with one or more surfaces cut with sharp, generally parallel teeth. Screwdrivers- A screwdriver is a tool, manual or powered, used for screwing (installing) and unscrewing (removing) screws. A typical simple screwdriver has a handle and a shaft, ending in a tip the user puts into the screw head before turning the handle.  Mallet- A type of hammer with a larger-than-usual head made of wood, rubber or similar non-iron material, used by woodworkers for driving a tool, such as a chisel. Carpenters use mallets for assembling. We used a mallet to drive the tent pegs into the ground. A weapon resembling the tool, but typically much larger . Measuring tape-   The Tape Measure can measure a distance given from one block to another. In absolute measurement mode, right-clicking on a block selects a block, then right-clicking on any other block will give the distance between those blocks to the nearest meter. Speed square- A SpeedSquare (rafter square, rafter angle square, triangle  square) is a triangular carpenters’ marking out tool. The Speed Square combines common functions of the combination square, try square, and framing squareinto one. Spiriy level-  A spirit level, bubble level or simply a level is an instrument designed to indicate whether a surface is horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb) Drills:  Hand drill:  A drill is a tool primarily used for making round holes or driving fasteners. It is fitted with a bit, either a drill or driver, depending on application, secured by a chuck. Drills are used to drill holes into walls, metal and wood jobs. Electric drill- An electric drill is a drill which is driven by an electric motor. The invention of the electric drill is credited to Arthur James Arnotand William Blanch Brain of Melbourne, Australia who patented the electric drill in 1889. In 1895, the first portable handhelddrill was created by brothers Wilhelm& Carl Fein of Stuttgart, Germany Wrench-  A wrench or spanner is a tool used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying torque to turn objects—usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts —or keep them from turning. In Commonwealth English (excluding Canada), spanner is the standard term. The most common shapes are called open-ended spanner and ring spanner. Scissors- Scissors are hand-operated shearing tools. A pair of scissors consists of a pair of metal blades pivoted so that the sharpened edges slide against each other when the handles (bows) opposite to the pivot are closed. Scissorsare used for cutting various thin materials, such as paper, cardboard, metal foil, cloth, rope, and wire. Saw- A saw is a tool consisting of a tough blade, wire, or chain with a hard toothed edge. It is used to cut through material, very often wood though sometimes metal or stone. The cut is made by placing the toothed edge against the material and moving it forcefully forth and less forcefully back or continuously forward. Screws-  A screw is a combination of simple machines —it is, in essence, an inclined plane wrapped around a central shaft, but the inclined plane (thread) also comes to a sharp edge around the outside, which acts a wedge as it pushes into the fastened material, and the shaft and helix also form a wedge in the form of the point. It is used for holding things together. Nut & bolt-  A nut is a type of fastener with a threaded hole. Nuts are almost always used in conjunction with a mating bolt to fasten multiple parts together. The two partners are kept together by a combination of their threads’ friction (with slight elastic deformation), a slight stretching of the bolt, and compression of the parts to be held together. Spanner-  A wrench or spanner is a tool used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying torque to turn objects—usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts —or keep them from turning. In Commonwealth English (excluding Canada), spanner is the standard term. The most common shapes are called open-ended spanner and ring spanner. Allen key – A hex key, Allen wrench or Allen key, is a simple tool used to drive bolts and screws with hexagonal sockets in their heads. The tool is usually formed of a single piece of hexagonal rod of hard steel, with blunt ends that are meant to fit snugly into the screw’s socket, bent in an “L” shape with unequal arms. Vise- A vise or vice is a mechanical apparatus used to secure an object to allow work to be performed on it. Vises have two parallel jaws, one fixed and the other movable, threaded in and out by a screw and lever. Plane- Plane (tool) A plane is a tool for shaping wood. Planes are used to flatten, reduce the thickness of, and impart a smooth surface to a rough piece of lumber. As the name implies, the tool turns the worked surface into a smooth plane, a level, even surface Sand scrapper- Sandpaper is produced in a range of grit sizes and is used to remove material from surfaces, either to make them smoother (for example, in painting and wood finishing), to remove a layer of material (such as old paint), or sometimes to make the surface rougher (for example, as a preparation for gluing). It is common to use the name of the abrasive when describing the paper, e.g. “aluminium oxide paper”, or “silicon carbide paper”. Washer- A washer is a thin plate (typically disk-shaped, but sometimes square) with a hole (typically in the middle) that is normally used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, such as a bolt or nut.  Clamps- A clamp is a fastening device used to hold or secure objects tightly together to prevent movement or separation through the application of inward pressure. Ruler- A ruler, sometimes called a rule or line gauge, is a device used in geometry and technical drawing, as well as the engineering and construction industries, to measure distances or draw straight lines.

Marker- A marker is something which is used to mark dimensions while working in the workshop. It could be a pencil, pen or a special marker pen.
