Tracing the Evolution of Band Sawing: Key Innovations and Industry Impact

Invention of band sawing

In the history of mankind, the invention of the band sawing machine can be regarded as a technological leap. Since then, the band saw has been used and improved for several generations, and has become one of the most widely used machine tool models on the market.

Band sawing machines are mainly used for metalworking and woodworking, but they can also be used to cut other long hard materials. The main advantages of the band saw machine include: uniform cutting movement due to its uniformly distributed tooth load, and the ability to cut irregular or curved profiles.

Sawing ideas

The idea of a band sawing machine dates back to the 19th century. Around 1809, William Newberry obtained a British patent for the idea, but the band saw was still impractical in any kind of applications. At that time, it was almost impossible to produce accurate and durable cutting band saw blade, and the continuous bending of the fragile blades on the hub will cause the welding of materials or joints to fail. After about 40 years, a woman Anne Paulin Crepin designed a welding technique which can successfully produce band saw blade with durability. The power hacksaws with reciprocating blades were once very common in the metalworking industries because of their practical use to meet customer needs. Later, with the development of technology, band saws and cold saws replaced power hacksaws.

Estimation of radius

Saw and work piece are two paired variables. The minimum radius of the cutting curve is determined by the width of the saw band and the curve. Most band sawing machines have two wheels that rotate on the same plane, one of which is powered. In addition, some can distribute three or four loads, thereby improving the uniformity of the machine. The band saw blade can have various tooth pitches and size ratios, which makes the band saw machine highly versatile and capable of sawing various raw materials such as wood, metal and plastic.

In addition to the radius, the band speed is determined by other major factors, ranging from 0.20 to 25 meters per second. In certain types of band sawing machines, such as custom band sawing machines designed for friction cutting of extra-hard metals, they can run at a belt speed of 76 meters per second, thereby increasing productivity.

Power source and operation

Today, almost all band sawing machines are at least driven by electric motors. Line shaft saws were once common in the market, but they have now been eliminated. Automatic band saws often have preset feed speeds, return, descent, part feed and clamping functions. These modern functions collaborate well in the production environment.

Today’s sawing

Sawing machines are like lathes and milling machines. Because the industry is constantly evolving, machine design needs to be constantly changing and innovative. Today, most band sawing machines are automatically controlled and operated by CNC systems. Common automatic band saws have preset feed speed, return, descent, part feed and part fixing functions. Under such production conditions, it is impractical to assign one on-site machine operator for each band saw machine.

In fact, one operator can efficiently feed and unload several automatic band saws. Some automatic band sawing machines rely on digital control to make cutting faster and more precise, and even perform more complex bevel cutting. Combining these advantages and needs, most modern metal band saw machines are equipped with CNC controllers to adapt to today's processing requirements and standards.
