Understanding Inline Planetary Gear Reducers: Key Features & Applications

What Is Inline Planetary Gear Reducer?

Inline planetary gear reducer, which is also known as inline planetary gearbox, is one type of gearbox reducer. The gear reducer is widely utilized for decreasing the speed of the electric motor to generate desired output speed as well as proper torque. There are a wide variety of gear reducers, or speed reducers, and the gearbox form is the most common design.

These gear reducers, including the focus of the article, the inline planetary gear reducer, are required to achieve two goals in the motorized machines. First of all, inline planetary gear reducer regulates the input speed of the motor in order to provide the accurate output speed. The output speed defines the correct operational rate of mechanisms that are driven by the electric motor. Secondly, the speed reducer multiplies the torque in the system to generate enough output torque to ensure smooth operations in automatic machines, resisting several physical properties that affect the motions.

With the inline planetary gear reducer, the input speed can be reduced and therefore more available jobs are available. Among various gear reducers, one of the benefits of inline planetary gear reducers is the excellent control of motor speed even applied to some automatic machines that have relatively high rotational speed.

Other inline styles of gearbox reducers that vary from shapes, dimensions, and gearing structure include helical gearing and spur gearing, harmonic wave generators and more. Helical gear type runs more smoothly and also quietly than spur gear type due to the ways how the gear teeth interact, which is rather economical among inline gear reducers.

Inline planetary gear reducers can provide higher nominal torque over than other gear types mentioned here. The compact design, efficient operation and flexibility in fabrication all make the inline planetary gear reducer popular choice for various industrial applications, especially for intermittent duty applications.

Where are Inline Planetary Gear Reducers Used?

Since the inline planetary gear reducers have ideal speed control ability and provide highest torque in the system, it can be easily found in a broad range of motorized machines. Nowadays, inline planetary gear reducers are used for construction equipment, medical equipment like surgical beds and tables, dryers, conveyors, vending and automatic welding machines, material handling machines, automotive transmission and wind generation equipment and some food processing equipment like mixers of food and beverage.

The high performance speed control of electric motors in order to consistently supply desired output speeds with minimal backlash makes inline planetary gear reducers increasingly popular for these motion control applications.

How Does Inline Planetary Gear Reducer Work?

The gearbox design of inline planetary gear reducer basically consists of the core sun gears and the planet gears work around it. The sun gear is located at the center, which has external teeth that mesh with the planet gears. Planet gears, which also have external gears mesh with a ring gear that has internal gear. The speed reducer can reduce the input speed while increasing the torque at the same time. The reason is that the output gear runs slower because it has more teeth than the input gear. With the design, the speed reducer can decrease the motor speed to supply proper output.

When it comes to the proper torque that inline planetary gear reducers should provide, the required amount of torque should be critically calculated, especially in some complex operations where many other operational factors must take into account. The resistance, friction, gravity and inertia should all be identified before selecting a suitable gear reducer and calculating the enough torque to ensure smooth motions.

Choose the Right Gearbox Reducer

As mentioned, there are a wide variety of speed reducer, here are some common gearbox types that are different from designs and are suitable for different kinds of use.

● Inline Planetary Gear Reducer:

The focus of this article, the inline planetary type has a compact design, which is a coaxial assembly, making the speed reducer has an ideal size. The primary advantages of this inline gear reducers are the efficiency, ideal speed control even with high rotational speed, high torque and low clearance. They have up to 50% more torque than the gear reducers with equivalent spur gears. On top of that, they provide quieter operations and ideal load distribution. However, the complex design costs more in maintenance. The inline planetary gear reducer is greatly suitable for applications with slow speed but high torque like rotary furnaces, machines require strong accelerations, modern machining centers, machine tools and other equipment in the agricultural industry.

● Worm Gear Reducer:

Worm gearbox reducer, which consist of worm wheel and worm gear, equipped with perpendicular input and output shafts. The worm wheel cannot drive the worm gear since the mechanism is not reversible, which provides great security for the system. This type of speed reducer is more economical and quieter than the inline planetary gear reducer because it does not vibrate. The compact design makes this type heat up quickly in the process. Worm gear reducers are preferred to use for applications that require a relatively high transmission ratio. Some common applications of the speed reducer include various conveyors, winches and handling equipment.

● Bevel Gear Reducer:

Bevel gear reducer has angular bell crank, permitting the operation to alter the rotation system of the machines, for example, switching a transverse rotation system to a longitudinal one. This speed gear reducer can handle a large amount of power, which is suitable for applications requiring high torque, however the planetary type still has higher performance. It is energy efficient but less economical among the gear reducers. The bevel gear reducer is recommended for higher power equipment like conveyors and automatic mobile machines in public working and agricultural industry.
