The current regulator is used to control the amount of electric current that is released from the electrodes. The amperage of the current should be controlled based on the materials to be joined.
How Does Spot Welding Work?
The operation of the spot welding process can be either manually conducted or automatically conducted. Either way, the operation is simple. The two copper electrodes face each other with a gap in between. When two sheet metals are overlapped with each other and placed between the electrodes, the electrodes close up to each other and contact the sheets on two sides at the same spot. As the electrodes make contact with the sheets in between, an electric current is released through the contact point and a weld is hence created.
The working principle of spot welding is to melt parts of two metal pieces so that the two metal pieces can be fused together at the melted area. When a piece of metal is heated, the area that receives the heat will be gradually melting and eventually reach a plastic state. When the plastic state is reached, the overlapped pieces will be forged together. A certain amount of pressure is applied on the welding site so that the fusion of the two pieces can complete in an efficient fashion. This process is sometimes referred to as a fabrication. Once the welding site cools down completely, the metal pieces are joined together permanently.
Spot welding is one of the most common welding methods. During a spot welding process, a small spot is created on the surface of the metal pieces and it is where the pieces are forged into one. Spot welding can work well with an automated system in assembly lines or another form of spot welding operations.
The energy-saving nature of this process also cuts down the production cost significantly. Since the electricity is focused on a fine spot, the energy is less likely to go to waste than other forms of resistance welding. On top of that, the simplicity of spot welding makes it widely accepted in many applications. It can be applied to join thin metal sheets made from stainless steel, titanium, or other alloys. Therefore, spot welding is employed frequently in the automotive, aerospace, and appliance industries.
