Rolling Alarm Robot: A Smart, Mobile Wake‑Up System Powered by Raspberry Pi and Google Calendar

Ever find yourself turning off your alarm clock only to wake up an hour later and rush out the door? Build a robot alarm clock that forces you to move—then you’ll actually get up.

Step 1: Introduction

Today most of us use our smartphones as alarm clocks because they’re convenient, versatile, and can even play custom tones or vibrate at the optimal wake‑up time. The downside? When the phone is within arm’s reach, it’s easy to slide it back into bed and miss the alarm entirely.

Imagine a device that can’t simply be silenced by a tap. Our Rolling Alarm Robot uses a Raspberry Pi and BrickPi to move around your room, emit a custom alarm tone, and keep going until you actively stop it. It also syncs directly with Google Calendar—any device that can access your calendar can adjust the alarm time on the fly.

By searching for events titled wake1 in your calendar, the robot automatically starts the alarm at the event time, so you can manage your wake‑up schedule from your phone, laptop, or tablet.

Step 2: Parts Required

Step 3: The Build

Start by gathering all the components listed above. The robot can be assembled with either LEGO Mindstorms NXT or EV3 motors and sensors; the BrickPi will handle the motor and sensor control.

Follow the step‑by‑step instructions in the Instruction Manual (PDF) to assemble the chassis, attach motors, and connect the sensors. Remember the port assignments:

Once assembled, the robot will roam freely, play the alarm tone, and only stop when you press one of the touch sensors. The Google Calendar integration allows you to set or modify the alarm time from any device, making this a flexible, hands‑free wake‑up solution.
