Your Essential Guide to CVIP Inspections for Commercial Fleets
If you operate commercial vehicles on Alberta’s roads, your fleet may be required to undergo the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP). The CVIP is designed to test the road-worthiness of commercial vehicles. Once your CVIP schedule is due, set up an appointment with Major Overhaul & Equipment Repair Inc. Let our licensed technicians take care of your vehicles so you can get back on the road ASAP.
How Often Should Commercial Vehicles Undergo the CVIP?
Annual CVIP Inspections
You’re covered by the CVIP if you operate commercial trucks, light trucks, truck-tractors, trailers, or semi-trailers intra-provincially. These types of vehicles need to undergo annual CVIP inspections if they meet or exceed a combined gross vehicle weight of 11,794 kilograms. Furthermore, similar commercial vehicles that operate extra-provincially and weigh 4, 500 kg need to undergo an annual inspection as well.
Semi–Annual CVIP Inspections
On the other hand, any bus that seats more than 10 passengers including the driver needs a CVIP inspection semi-annually. This excludes buses operated for personal use.
The Importance of CVIP Inspections in Edmonton
Commercial transport generally involves carrying heavy loads, passengers, and dangerous goods. On top of this, commercial vehicles also share the road with other travelers. This creates the need for strict regulations that will protect Alberta’s highway system and everyone who uses them.
Alberta Transportation enforces a variety of standards, including the CVIP, to fulfill that purpose. These regular inspections ensure that commercial vehicles are always in excellent working condition. They also help operators spot and resolve any issue with their vehicles before they cause more trouble.

The CVIP Inspection Checklist
In Alberta, only licensed private technicians and facilities can conduct the CVIP road test and visual inspection. The inspection covers many elements such as:
- braking
- steering
- transmission
- engine operation
- defroster
- electrical system
- lighting
- tires
- exhaust system
- suspension
- and more
Afterwards, you will receive an estimate for any necessary repairs. Resolve these issues as soon as you can. You won’t be able to obtain a valid inspection certificate if there are existing problems with your vehicles.
