How igus Plastic Cable Carriers Slash Maintenance for Automated Baking Systems
Weldon Solutions has upgraded its automated storage and retrieval systems for the baking industry with igus plastic cable carriers and continuous‑flex cables, replacing bulky festoon systems that occupied extra space and required frequent, costly maintenance.
These cable carriers are now installed in bakeries worldwide to streamline pan storage and retrieval. By mounting the carriers beneath the machinery, Weldon eliminates clearance problems, reduces installation time, and cuts ongoing maintenance.
Traditional festoon systems left cables dangling above equipment, creating a risk of dust and debris contaminating food and containers. The igus cable carriers are mounted low, keeping any potential contaminants on the floor and away from exposed food.
“The reliability of the igus cable carrier is a big plus for our customers,” said Charles Gales, automation sales manager at Weldon Solutions. “Its open design makes it easy to clean with an air hose, helping our bakery partners maintain a sanitary environment.”
Weldon relies on igus System E4 Energy Chains, engineered for long runs and demanding applications. These chains support heavy loads, feature removable crossbars for quick cable and hose replacement, and protect Chainflex power and control cables that extend equipment life across all types of automated machinery.
Since 2000, Weldon has incorporated the AUTO‑GLIDE feature into its Energy Chains. The ribbed inner radius interlocks to create smooth channels, while optional positioning guides and floor bumpers prevent derailment or misalignment. AUTO‑GLIDE eliminates the need for a trough even on runs up to 125 feet.
“We have been using AUTO‑GLIDE carriers for more than eight years, and none have been replaced yet,” Gales added. “We’re now using igus products throughout the company and discovering new applications every day.”
