MSC Industrial Direct Acquires Rutland Tool & Supply to Strengthen MRO Distribution

MSC Industrial Direct Company, a leading direct marketer and distributor of metalworking and MRO supplies across the United States, has completed its acquisition of Rutland Tool & Supply Company—an established subsidiary of Lawson Products Inc. The transaction was valued at approximately $11 million in cash, with MSC also assuming select liabilities. Management anticipates the deal will become accretive to earnings by late‑fiscal 2011 or early‑fiscal 2012.

Founded in 1955 and headquartered in Whittier, California, Rutland has built a robust portfolio of industrial tools, cutting tools, abrasives, machinery, precision instruments, safety products, and other MRO items. The company serves more than 20,000 customers, offering access to over 100,000 SKUs through multiple channels—including an online catalog, physical showrooms, printed catalogs, and targeted sales flyers. Rutland’s clientele spans industrial machine shops, metalworking facilities, and maintenance & repair operations.

In 2009, Rutland reported revenues of $33.7 million, underscoring its significant market presence. The integration of Rutland’s product range and customer base will deepen MSC’s market penetration and enhance service capabilities for its industrial partners.
