Selecting the Ideal Metals for Precision CNC Machining

We are continuing our series of articles discussing aspects to consider when selecting metals for your next prototypes to production manufacturing and/or contract manufacturing project.  Our previous article covered the importance of considering the weight and strength of the metal(s) you specify.  Today, we will look at two more areas that can affect your raw material selection.

How/Where Final Parts Will Be Used

It is extremely important that you choose a metal that can be used in the environment(s) in which it will be used.  Do you need a metal that can withstand extreme temperatures? High pressures? Corrosion resistant? The end use of the part or component being used must be carefully considered during the metal selection process.

Finishing

Post-production finishing is an added expense. Once you have narrowed down a list of suitable metals, then consider what type of finishing will be needed and the cost for each.
