Laser Cutting: Precision CNC Machining for High-Quality Production
Laser cutting is a precision CNC machining process that is used in a variety of contract manufacturing and prototypes to production manufacturing projects. The expected outcome is similar to that of other CNC machining processes such as CNC turning and CNC milling. The difference is laser cutting machines use a laser to remove material. The laser itself will burn, vaporize, or melt the material it is focused on, thus allowing the machinist to “cut” the material into the desired shape.
Laser cutting is a versatile process that can be used on numerous types of materials including glass, paper, metal, wood, plastic, and even gemstones. The laser does not make actual contact with the material, making it more versatile and less likely to cause damage to the surrounding material.
The overall laser cutting process involves a few basic steps. First, a 2D vector of the project is created. Next, the material is selected and placed. Them the beam is generated and focused. Once everything is set, the beam will strike the material and heating and melting will occur. The laser cutting machine will move as needed to yield the final cut.
Our next article will cover some of the advantages of the laser cutting process.
