DATRON MLCube Pro: The Ultimate Industrial Large‑Format CNC Solution

DATRON MLCube Pro: The Ultimate Industrial Large‑Format CNC Solution

For over a decade, the DATRON MLCube has been a benchmark for large‑format machining, offering a generous 60” × 40” work envelope in a compact footprint. Primarily designed for flat‑sheet work, the MLCube has consistently delivered precision and reliability across diverse industries.

As production volumes grew and customers demanded higher throughput, the original MLCube’s chip evacuation, sheet loading, and automation interfaces revealed gaps. In response, DATRON’s R&D team embarked on a new project in summer 2022, culminating in the MLCube Pro – a fully industrialized, automation‑ready machine that builds on the proven MLCube platform.

A Familiar Foundation, Engineered for Industry

The MLCube Pro retains the robust motors, guideways, and core structure that made the original popular, but it introduces several key enhancements tailored to heavy‑load, high‑volume environments. A standout feature is the inclusion of X and Y linear scales as standard, providing superior positional accuracy across the entire work area.

Perhaps the most noticeable upgrade is the redesigned enclosure, engineered for automated chip management, heavy‑sheet handling, and improved operator ergonomics.

Key Design Improvements

Advanced Chip Management

Large‑format jobs, such as machining a 60” × 40” × 1” aluminum sheet, generate substantial chip volumes. Leveraging lessons from the MxCube, the MLCube Pro employs integrated nozzles that blow chips away from the guide rails and funnel them beneath the table, where a motorized conveyor efficiently removes debris. An ethanol‑based coolant keeps chips dry, preventing sticky residue and simplifying maintenance.

Effortless Top Loading for Heavy Materials

A 40” × 30” × 1” aluminum plate weighs approximately 235 pounds – too heavy for manual front loading. The MLCube Pro’s design incorporates a top‑crane loading approach: the automatic front door and roof panel open simultaneously, granting full overhead access. When closed, the operator remains protected, while the standard front loading path remains available for smaller parts.

Automation‑Ready Door Design

To integrate seamlessly with robotic work cells, DATRON developed a dual‑door system that slides along servo‑driven rails within the machine footprint. Each door can be opened or closed via a program command or a simple button press, allowing full access to the work area while keeping door movement contained and eliminating manual handling.

Enhanced Ergonomics and Operator Experience

Given its expansive work area, the MLCube Pro includes a built‑in step that safely reaches the rear of the table. The touchscreen control panel is mounted on a mobile pedestal, granting operators the flexibility to position it according to their workflow. These ergonomic refinements reduce operator fatigue and increase safety during prolonged production runs.

Clearer, Safer Viewing

The laminated glass window, reinforced with an inner polycarbonate safety layer, protects operators from chip impact and prevents hazing or frosting. Even in the event of a tool or part ejection, the window offers maximum safety.

Tool Capacity and Performance

To support continuous production, the MLCube Pro ships with DATRON’s Tool Assist System, an external storage unit that holds either 60 or 143 HSK tools outside the machining area, preserving the full 60” × 40” working envelope. The machine offers a 3 kW or 4 kW spindle, both equipped with HSK 25 collets, and can accommodate workpieces up to 80” × 60”. These specifications make it ideal for large‑format, high‑precision machining.

Options and Compatibility

Almost all standard MLCube options are available for the MLCube Pro, including camera systems, X/Y/Z probing, vacuum tables, dust extraction, and CleanCut. The main structural differences are the full polymeric concrete table, which excludes the open‑front and 4th/5th‑axis trunnion options found on the MLCube. However, the standard 4th rotary axis remains compatible.

Launch and Legacy

In April 2023, DATRON unveiled the MLCube Pro at its Tech Day event in Traisa, Germany, reaffirming its commitment to innovation in high‑speed, large‑format machining. With the MLCube Pro, DATRON now delivers a truly industrial solution for high‑volume, precision production of large workpieces, combining the proven performance of the MLCube with new automation‑ready, heavy‑duty capabilities.
