Avoid Driving Drowsy

A good night’s sleep is vital for every driver. Getting the right amount of rest plays a critical role in safety on the road. If you feel drowsy, pull over and take a break. If you never usually drive at night, there is a greater chance you’ll experience fatigue than truckers who are used to it. 

Some tips to help you get a night of better sleep include:

• Cutting back on caffeine, nicotine, sugar, and spicy foods a couple of hours before bed.
• Create a comfortable environment to sleep in.
• Use earplugs or a white noise machine to block out outside noise.

Maintain Eye Contact On The Road

• Always avoid driving distracted:  Resist the temptation to look at your phone or reach for objects.

• Don’t forget to keep a clean windshield: Bugs and dirt can build up on the windshield over time. At night, this can cause the light to reflect and limit visibility. When you clean your windshield, check to make sure your wiper blades are in working condition. 
• Look away from oncoming traffic: Looking directly into oncoming traffic headlights can be temporarily blinding and distracting. Keep your eyes moving or look down towards the right side of the road.
• Use your high beams: When it’s appropriate, use your high beams to improve visibility.

Drive The Speed Limit

Speeding can result in traffic tickets and accidents. Driving within the speed limit protects you and other drivers. Driving at night, you may face impaired drivers and wildlife – slowing down allows for extra reaction time and planning ahead.
