Horizontal vs. Vertical Milling Machines: A Clear, Expert Comparison
Machine shop terminology can be confusing, particularly for a newcomer. And if you’re in the market for a new machine tool you can quickly get overwhelmed by jargon.
Much of that confusion comes from the different machine tools themselves. You have lathes, mills, and routers, all of which are best for different cutting operations. Beyond that, over the years machine tool manufacturers have developed a number of specialized tools, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
Milling machines are a good example. A quick look at available milling machines will bring up vertical milling machines, turret mills, horizontal milling machines, knee mills, and more. What do all these machines do? More importantly, what’s the difference between them?
Much of the confusion can be cleared up by explaining the difference between vertical and horizontal milling machines, so we’ll do just that in this article.
How does a milling machine work?
Let’s start by explaining what a milling machine does. Along with lathes, mills are one of the two most common machine tools found in machine shops and home workshops. The two machines work in contrasting ways. With lathes, a workpiece is mounted between centers and rotated rapidly on a spindle; when a cutting tool is brought into contact with the workpiece, it removes material evenly from the circumference of the part.
With milling machines, the workpiece is stationary – fastened securely to the bed of the mill. The cutting tool itself rotates, and removes material when it comes into contact with the part. Since lathes and mills cut parts with a different mechanism, many manufacturers use the two machines in tandem – lathes for some cuts and mills for others.
Milling machines are further distinguished by how the cutting tool itself rotates, leading to two primary kinds of mills – horizontal and vertical milling machines.
What is a horizontal milling machine?
Horizontal milling machines are somewhat less common than vertical milling machines. They are typically larger machine tools often found in heavy industrial settings.
On a horizontal milling machine, a workpiece is mounted to a flat bed, which can travel along the X and Y axes. The cutting tool is usually a blade or disk, spinning like a saw blade and mounted on a horizontal spindle above the workpiece. As well as cutting into or through the workpiece, the cutting tool can be used to cut grooves, slots, or gears in to the workpiece.
What is a vertical milling machine?
Also known as a turret or knee mill, vertical milling machines are often smaller but more versatile than their horizontal mill counterparts. In their general outline, vertical and horizontal mills look similar. Vertical mills also feature a bed for the workpiece to be mounted on, and a cutting tool suspended on a gantry above the workpiece. But instead of a spinning blade or disk, vertical mills feature a rotating spindle and tool head. The cutting tool spins like a drill bit, and the machinist lowers the tool into the workpiece.
In general, vertical mills are generally more flexible than horizontal mills. Depending on the make and model of the mill, the turret or toolhead of the mill might be capable of cuts on a number of axes including at an angle to the workpiece. This allows machinists to use even a small vertical mill for a variety of cuts.
That flexibility does come at a cost; vertical mills are comparatively smaller and less powerful than horizontal mills. At the same time, their versatility makes vertical mills ideal for customized applications, such as small production runs or one-off prototypes.

Finishing touches
All of the jargon aside, vertical mills are most commonly used in small industrial applications or in areas like labs and R&D departments, where versatility and flexibility are paramount. Horizontal mills are more likely to be used in heavy industry. They can also be used to cut slots and gears, which can be done more easily on a horizontal mill due to the rotation of the tool.
There are other more minor differences, but tool orientation and cutting geometry are the crucial distinctions between vertical and horizontal milling machines.
