Planning for IMTS 2026: Prioritize Process, Not Just Products

Planning for IMTS 2026: Prioritize Process, Not Just Products

Process solutions are increasingly taking center stage at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS). (Source: IMTS)

IMTS, held at Chicago’s McCormick Place, is a landmark event that spans over 1.2 million square feet of exhibit space and draws visitors from more than 110 countries. The 2026 edition, running September 14‑19, is slated to feature roughly 1,800 exhibitors and attract upwards of 86,000 attendees.

Over the years, exhibitors have shifted their focus from merely showcasing products to presenting comprehensive solutions—especially for companies that manufacture high-volume parts rather than one‑offs or prototypes.

Featured Content

Automation is no longer synonymous with robots alone. While modern robots are more flexible, easier to program, and in some cases redeployable, shops are also investing in equipment such as tool presetters, on‑machine part and tool probing systems, and automatic tool changers for B‑axis Swiss‑type lathes. These tools help eliminate manual tasks and reduce the risk of error during machining. CAD/CAM software continues to evolve, integrating automated part‑programming capabilities that further streamline production.

Establishing a robust overall machining process is key.

Efficient measurement and inspection processes are also gaining traction. Lights‑out machining can maximize equipment and workforce utilization, but it often results in a backlog of parts awaiting inspection. This bottleneck can drain valuable shop‑floor time. New measurement technologies—such as vision systems—speed up and simplify part measurement, freeing staff to focus on higher‑value tasks.

Machining matters, but so does precise part measurement.

Machine monitoring technologies bring it all together. Relying on intuition alone can lead to suboptimal shop‑floor decisions. Instead, real‑time data from machine tools—such as spindle activity logs—enable managers to make data‑driven adjustments. This holistic view helps identify and eliminate bottlenecks before they become critical.

Recognizing process bottlenecks early is essential.

More Than a Trade Show—An Industry Event

While IMTS showcases the latest software, tooling, and machine tools, the event’s true value lies in its networking and educational opportunities. IMTS 2026 will feature a rich conference program that runs Monday through Thursday (9/14‑17), offering over 70 sessions on topics ranging from machine‑tool advancements and AI/machine‑learning in manufacturing to OEE implementation, workforce development, cutting‑tool innovations, workholding, and cybersecurity.

The IMTS 2026 Job Shops Workshop on Tuesday, September 15, will explore automation integration, AI’s impact on job shops, and strategies for navigating the evolving manufacturing landscape while seizing new business opportunities.

Additionally, Production Machining’s sister brand Additive Manufacturing Media will host a workshop on Tuesday, 9/15, 1‑4 p.m., examining how 3D printing is driving innovation and efficiency in aerospace and defense. This half‑day session, in partnership with Gardner Business Media brands Modern Machine Shop and Manufacturing Connected, will delve into why manufacturers in regulated sectors are turning to additive manufacturing for speed, cost savings, and logistical advantages.

Adopting a process mindset for IMTS is how I approach the event. I aim to reconnect with industry peers, discover new ideas for articles and videos, and identify actionable opportunities. For more information, visit imts.com.
