The Complete Guide to Injection Molding: From Pellets to Finished Parts

Injection molding, developed in the late 19th century, remains a cornerstone of modern manufacturing, producing a vast array of plastic parts. By heating raw plastic pellets until they melt and then injecting them into precisely engineered mold cavities, manufacturers achieve high precision and repeatability.
Fundamentals of Injection Molding
Injection molding relies on a specialized machine that integrates a hopper, heater, reciprocating screw, nozzle, and mold. These components work in harmony to transform molten plastic into parts that exactly replicate the mold cavity’s geometry.
Introducing Feedstock into the Machine
Pellets are loaded into the machine’s hopper, where they fall onto a reciprocating screw. The screw’s rotating action and built‑in heaters melt the pellets, producing a uniform, viscous polymer that is then guided toward the nozzle.
Capping the Mold
Once the molten plastic fills the mold cavity, the machine clamps the mold shut. The applied pressure holds the material in place, preventing shrinkage and ensuring dimensional accuracy.
Cooling and Solidification
The filled mold is maintained at a controlled temperature for a calculated period, allowing the polymer to cool and harden while retaining the mold’s shape.
Ejecting the Finished Part
After solidification, the mold opens and the part is either automatically ejected by a spring‑loaded ejector or removed manually, depending on the machine’s design. The cycle then repeats for the next component.
