Robotic Welding: Driving Efficiency and Quality in Steel Production & Construction

Robotic Welding: Driving Efficiency and Quality in Steel Production & Construction

Today, there are several metal industries that use robotic welding, and the steel and construction industries are no different. But, it has not always been that way.

Over the last couple of decades, industries have shifted from manual welders to robotic welding cells due to higher deposition rates, high quality finished welds, and less worker error.

One construction company, ConXtech, decided all the way back in 2000 to use robotic weld cells to help construct their mid-rise residential structures that use steel frames. Fanuc and Lincoln Electric products became vital to that company’s success by having the right reach and accuracy for the job – plates that required full-penetration welds on the top and bottom flanges and fillet welds on the beam’s web and the back of the flanges.

In 2006, LB Steel/Coburn, a manufacturer of many steel products for railway and other industries, decided it was time for new robotic welders to help their process. The company implemented three Motoman welding cells to accommodate their larger volume of products, cutting down the welding time from 12 hours manually to 2-3 hours robotically.

These companies, as well as others, have realized that welding robotics has heightened accuracy and reliability, as well as increased repeatability, which speeds up the process, saving the manufacturers time and money.
