ams & Face++ Partner to Accelerate 3D Optical Sensing for Faster Face Recognition Deployment

ams and Face++ have formalized a strategic partnership to expedite the deployment of 3D optical sensing solutions across OEMs and system integrators. This collaboration targets advanced applications such as facial recognition, facial payments, Animoji generation, and augmented/virtual reality, delivering faster time‑to‑market with high‑performance systems.

The joint effort centers on infrared‑light‑projector‑based 3D optical sensing, which maps real‑world surfaces—particularly user faces—providing precise depth data. This technology is reshaping security and authentication workflows by enabling reliable, contactless face recognition on mobile devices, thereby offering a secure alternative to PIN codes and fingerprint sensors for device unlocking and payment transactions.

Under the agreement, ams and Face++ will align their product roadmaps to ensure optimal interoperability between ams 3D sensing modules and Face++ software. The partners will also provide coordinated, system‑level technical support to manufacturers, ensuring seamless integration and robust customer service.

Notably, in November 2018, ams announced a collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies to co‑develop face‑recognition solutions for mobile phones, combining ams IR illuminator modules with Qualcomm mobile application processors. This partnership builds on that momentum, extending the reach and performance of 3D optical sensing across a broader ecosystem.
