ON Semiconductor Launches Solar‑Powered RSL10 Multi‑Sensor Platform for Truly Battery‑Free IoT

ON Semiconductor is advancing the future of maintenance‑free, battery‑less IoT with the RSL10 Multi‑Sensor Platform, which operates solely on a miniature solar cell. This turnkey solution enables developers to build sensors that harvest solar energy continuously and transmit data via Bluetooth® Low Energy—without the need for batteries or other non‑renewable power sources.

At the heart of the platform lies the RSL10 System‑in‑Package (SiP), a compact module that integrates the RSL10 radio, its antenna, and all passive components. Combined with a lightweight solar cell and a suite of ultra‑low‑power Bosch Sensortec sensors, the platform delivers reliable, low‑duty‑cycle operation while keeping power consumption to a minimum.

Key sensors include the BME280, an all‑in‑one environmental probe that measures pressure, temperature and humidity, and the BMA400, an ultra‑low‑power 3‑axis accelerometer. Together, they provide comprehensive data streams for applications ranging from environmental monitoring to motion detection, all powered purely by harvested energy.

The RSL10’s power‑efficient architecture is further enhanced by an advanced power‑management system that maximizes energy harvested from the solar cell. Ideal for duty‑cycle‑limited scenarios, the platform supports intermittent BLE communication, making it suitable for smart‑home and building‑automation use cases such as HVAC control, window and door sensing, air‑quality monitoring, and asset tracking—including package open/close detection, shock monitoring, and temperature‑humidity logging.

To accelerate development, ON Semiconductor provides the complete design stack: Gerber files, schematic, bill of materials, and fully customizable source code packaged in a CMSIS‑compliant software library. The RSL10 Solar‑Cell Multi‑Sensor Platform is now available, alongside other energy‑efficient rapid‑prototyping IoT solutions like the Energy Harvesting Bluetooth Low Energy Switch.

With this platform, manufacturers can bring battery‑free, maintenance‑free IoT devices to market faster and with lower operational costs.
