Arm Unveils Pelion: A Unified IoT Platform Powered by Treasure Data

Named after Mount Pelion, the mythical hill where the centaur Chiron mentored heroes, Arm’s new IoT platform Pelion signals a fresh surge in the industry’s platform wars.

Pelion marries Arm’s proven Mbed IoT device platform with cutting‑edge capabilities acquired from Treasure Data and Stream Technologies. Treasure Data, highlighted in Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant for data‑management solutions for analytics, represents Arm’s largest cash acquisition to date. Stream Technologies brings industry‑standard wireless connectivity for a broad spectrum of IoT devices.

“Over the past eighteen months we’ve focused on adding value atop our chip architecture to simplify the complex challenges of IoT, especially device management,” said Joyce Kim, Arm’s Chief Marketing Officer. “We’re betting on IoT because it’s a substantial opportunity.”

Arm projects that by 2035 the global IoT ecosystem will encompass one trillion devices, generating roughly ten trillion actionable data streams. “Managing and securing this volume of data is critical,” Kim added. “That’s why the Treasure Data acquisition is central to our strategy.”

Data analytics remains a core focus. A 2018 Forrester Consulting study, commissioned by Arm, found that 67% of organizations grapple with data silos, and more than half struggle with data preparation.

“IoT complexity stems from the sheer variety of technologies and software needed to deploy it,” said Dipesh Patel, President of Arm’s IoT Services Group. “Our goal is to make it straightforward for anyone to start an IoT project.”

Pelion offers a subscription‑based, cloud‑agnostic platform that connects, manages, secures, and derives insights from IoT device projects of any size. It supports public, private, and hybrid environments and is backed by a partner ecosystem of over 140 companies.
