From Artificial to Augmented Intelligence: How Machines are Enhancing Human Expertise
Artificial Intelligence has long been portrayed in Hollywood as a monolithic, autonomous force. After six decades of hype, we are now witnessing a shift: AI is moving beyond the realm of robots and becoming a partner that amplifies human ingenuity.
The spark that ignited this shift didn’t come from deep dives into machine learning or engineering. It emerged from the everyday challenges we face in the tech industry—how to scale knowledge, bridge skill gaps, and accelerate innovation.

During my tenure at Yahoo! and Apple, I was part of teams that built the backbone of today’s cloud infrastructure, a system whose performance has more than doubled year over year. Yet each new data center required assembling a cohort of over 100 man‑years of specialized talent. As these skills became scarcer, we realized that we needed to unlock the latent potential in everyone, not just the rare experts.
We live in a world where technological progress accelerates at an exponential rate, outpacing the growth of human capabilities. Today’s AI systems are not only performing tasks—they are generating insights, and what once were simple sensors are evolving into full sensory systems that perceive sight, sound, and touch.
The Internet of Things (IoT) now powers “self‑driving” actions that rely on these sensory insights. Technology is no longer a passive tool; it is becoming a conscious, collaborative coworker. Our role is to manage and mentor this new partner.
With advanced human‑to‑machine interfaces, anyone can train and guide these systems using natural language. Human knowledge remains the bedrock of AI’s real value, proving that AI is best seen as an extension, not a replacement, of human intelligence. When this partnership matures, the term “Artificial Intelligence” gives way to “Augmented Intelligence.”
Enter Augmented Intelligence
Augmented Intelligence will fuse human creativity with machine speed, granting individuals instant access to the world’s collective expertise while reducing the time needed to become a subject‑matter expert. Traditional experts grow slowly, while beginners can learn rapidly. The combination of both yields a new paradigm where intellectual advancement can keep pace with the annual doubling of computer performance.
In my leadership experience, the success of a team hinges on the collective intelligence they can harness—far more than any single individual’s output. The same principle applies to the next generation of AI coworkers. Though some view this evolution as a threat, history shows that such fears—like the fear of mass literacy—are ultimately overcome.
