At a recent event hosted by Western Digital in partnership with ReadWrite, Accenture Managing Director Tom Stuermer unpacked the practical link between AI and IoT. Here are four critical takeaways from his presentation.
1. Executives See IoT as Essential, Yet Most Lack a Roadmap
In a survey, 95 % of executives said their companies would adopt IoT within the next three years. While nearly 75 % are still exploring possibilities, only 7 % have a comprehensive IoT strategy in place.
2. Connected Devices Are Generating a Data Explosion—and a Complex Challenge
The rapid rise of consumer and commercial IoT devices is projected to reach 50 billion units, 212 billion sensors, 6.1 billion app users, and 31 exabytes of mobile data per month by 2020. The sheer volume of data demands a new approach to capture, move, and interpret information across contexts.
3. AI Makes the Data Work for Us
Artificial intelligence is uniquely positioned to “sense, comprehend, and act” on the deluge of device data, enabling seamless integration and real‑time decision making. Early adopters illustrate this power: Uber’s AI refines driver‑passenger matching and anticipates autonomous driving trends, while Siemens leverages AI and IoT to run production lines autonomously for weeks, continuously optimizing processes.
4. Training AI and People Is Critical for Success
Realizing the full potential of AI‑enabled IoT requires dual training: AI models must learn to execute tasks and improve autonomously, and human operators need to master the skills that complement AI, minimizing errors while harnessing its strengths. Crowdsourcing and open‑source collaboration are becoming essential tools in this training ecosystem.
AI and IoT training will be a top priority for corporate leaders in the coming years. To dive deeper, join us at the IoT Revolution Symposium in San Francisco, CA, on July 11th—where 400+ industry leaders, investors, founders, analysts, and dealmakers will explore AI among many other IoT topics.
