Dell Technologies Invests $1 Billion to Shape the Future of IoT

On Tuesday, Dell Technologies unveiled a comprehensive strategy for the Internet of Things, announced a new IoT division, and pledged $1 billion to research and development. CEO and Chairman Michael Dell described IoT as “the infrastructure of the next industrial revolution,” underscoring the company’s commitment to co‑inventing solutions with customers and partners.

Establishing a Dedicated IoT Division

The new IoT Division, led by VMware Chief Technology Officer Ray O’Farrell, will orchestrate Dell’s end‑to‑end IoT portfolio. By fusing internally built technologies with offerings across Dell Technologies’ ecosystem, the division aims to deliver complete, ready‑to‑deploy solutions that simplify the deployment of integrated IoT systems.

Edge‑First Distributed Computing

Dell is shifting focus from purely cloud‑centric models to distributed computing that brings AI and IoT together across the edge, core, and cloud layers. This architecture reduces latency, enhances industrial IoT security, and delivers cost efficiencies. “Our new distributed computing framework will unlock unprecedented capabilities for customers worldwide,” said Michael Dell.

Innovative Projects Driving Edge Intelligence

Dell has outlined several high‑impact initiatives:

Leveraging Dell Technologies Capital for IoT Innovation

Dell Technologies Capital, the company’s venture arm, partners closely with the new IoT division to inject industry insight and forge relationships with promising startups. This collaboration expedites the rollout of cutting‑edge IoT, AI, and ML solutions.

An illustrative partnership is with Edico Genome, creators of the DRAGEN processor. This specialized hardware accelerates next‑generation sequencing analysis, enabling diagnosticians to complete whole‑genome diagnostics for critically ill newborns in just 20 minutes—down from the traditional 50‑hour window—thanks to the partnership with Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.
