ABB Launches Smart Sensor to Monitor Bearing Health and Reduce Downtime

ABB has unveiled a cutting‑edge smart sensor designed for mounted bearings, a key component of the company’s ABB Ability Digital Powertrain suite. The sensor harnesses advanced vibration and temperature algorithms to continuously evaluate bearing health, providing early warnings of potential failures.

By detecting subtle changes in operating conditions, the sensor helps prevent costly downtime in critical applications such as bulk material handling conveyors in mining, aggregate, and cement plants, as well as in the food & beverage and HVAC industries. Early intervention allows operators to schedule maintenance proactively, safeguarding productivity and safety.

Installation is straightforward: the sensor mounts directly onto the bearing and transmits data wirelessly to a smartphone or tablet. This real‑time connectivity gives field personnel instant access to health metrics, even in hard‑to‑reach or hazardous locations.
