Edge Hyperconvergence: VMware & Eurotech Driving Efficient Industrial IoT

Bob Emmerson
Edge and fog computing are reshaping operational efficiency by processing data near its source, enabling real‑time insights and rapid decision‑making. Leading players such as VMware and Eurotech are at the forefront of this evolution.
VMware’s software‑defined hyperconvergence uses a hypervisor—a virtual machine monitor—to deliver compute, storage, and management within a tightly integrated stack. Eurotech, a veteran in enterprise‑class Industrial IoT, blends its Operational Technology (OT) strengths with IT expertise from ecosystem partners.
Both companies have extended VMware virtualization beyond traditional data centres to the edge of OT networks. Figure 1 below illustrates Eurotech’s deployment strategy.

This integration elevates the hyperconvergence standard: consolidating functional elements at the hypervisor level, coupled with federated management, cuts inefficiencies and lowers total cost of ownership. Eurotech plans to commercialize edge servers and IoT gateways pre‑installed with VMware virtualization, bringing these benefits to the field.
VMware’s hypervisor was showcased on Eurotech’s rail‑certified, fan‑less edge server platform during VMworld 2017 in Las Vegas and Barcelona, underscoring its suitability for transportation‑grade hardware.
The upcoming products target scenarios where multiple computer systems run distinct OT solutions—often involving varied hardware and software stacks that create logistical and support challenges. Virtualization at the edge streamlines management, reduces maintenance costs, and improves operational performance across sectors such as rail, construction, mining, maritime, smart energy, and retail.
This overview highlights a promising development in OT‑centric hyperconverged infrastructures. While still evolving, we anticipate complementary concepts emerging in the near future.
