The Future of Work: Connectivity, Creativity, and Collaboration

Over the past decade, offices have evolved into open, light‑filled environments that encourage relaxation and enhance productivity.
Today, the vision for the office of tomorrow is being reshaped by rapid advancements in automation, the Internet of Things (IoT), and voice‑activated technology. Below, Rob Ferris, Director of Document Solutions at Canon UK, outlines three key trends that are making the modern workplace more connected, creative, and collaborative.
Connected
Humans can speak at up to 400 words per minute, yet our typing speed tops out around 40 words per minute. Voice‑activated systems are bridging this gap, allowing us to interact with office devices more naturally. Amazon’s Alexa for Business is a prime example of this shift.
In 2023, a U.S. tech firm announced a pilot program that embedded IoT chips in employee badges, enabling seamless access to doors, computers, and even cafeteria kiosks. While initially a publicity stunt, such connectivity is now integral to routine office tasks—monitoring supplies, reporting technical issues, and even tracking staff well‑being.
Research shows that only about half of workers are satisfied with their office temperature, yet connected HVAC systems can automatically adjust settings based on real‑time weather data. Smart desks that alert users when they've sat for too long further illustrate how IoT can create healthier, more efficient workspaces.
Creative
The World Economic Forum identified creativity as a top skill for the workforce by 2020, and the trend continues to accelerate. Automation and augmented robotics are freeing employees from repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on higher‑value, human‑centric activities such as innovation and critical thinking.
While remote and mobile work gained traction a decade ago, recent studies suggest that creative collaboration often thrives in in‑person settings. Organizations are therefore re‑prioritizing creative skill development as a core competency for future success.

Collaborative
“People entering the workforce today know how to navigate messaging, photo, and video apps—but many are still unfamiliar with email,” said Workplace executive Julien Codorniou in 2017. The rise of platforms like Cisco Spark, Facebook Workplace, Flock, Slack, and Microsoft Teams reflects a shift toward real‑time, conversational interfaces where work flows within a single chat environment.
Such collaboration tools support an “always on” culture that demands rapid response times—often measured in seconds rather than days. As collaborative robots (“cobots”) become more affordable, we can expect them to assist in office tasks, from organizing files to facilitating physical tasks, further enhancing teamwork.
