Two-Thirds of Enterprises Deploy IoT—What It Means for SMEs and the Path to Scale

Two-Thirds of Enterprises Deploy IoT—What It Means for SMEs and the Path to Scale

Companies of all sizes are embracing IoT, says Sylwia Kechiche, principal analyst, IoT, GSMA Intelligence, in the firm’s most recent survey. The data shows that nearly 66% of enterprises with more than 20 employees have already deployed an IoT solution—an adoption rate that eclipses many expectations.

Small Deployments, Big Impact

While the majority of deployments remain modest—77% involve fewer than 500 devices—SMEs are leading the charge. For small enterprises, 84% of deployments use less than 100 devices, and 56% deploy fewer than 50. This trend reflects a focus on “everyday” use cases such as asset tracking, quality control, and basic security, rather than high‑tech integrations.

From Proof‑of‑Concept to Scale

IoT is moving beyond pilot projects, but the market is still in a maturation phase. As companies accumulate more devices, they unlock richer data streams that can be fed into AI and ML models, unlocking new efficiencies. Microsoft research indicates that UK firms adopting AI outperform peers by up to 5% in productivity and performance.

Productivity: The Primary Driver

Productivity gains drive most IoT investments. A case in point: Ericsson’s Panda Nanjing factory automated its production line with IoT, achieving a 50% ROI in the first year and breakeven in under two years. Across the board, even the smallest deployments can deliver at least a 4% cost saving, with incremental benefits tapering as deployments exceed 5,000 devices.

Benefits Beyond Cost Savings

Beyond immediate cost reductions, IoT enables tailored products, sharper insights, and streamlined processes—capabilities that help firms stay competitive in an increasingly digital marketplace.

Persistent Challenges

Integration, security, and cost remain the top hurdles, especially for smaller firms that lack in‑house expertise. Custom‑built solutions often come with a premium price tag.

Industry Partnerships Make Deployments Simpler

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the theme was “making deployments simpler.” Partnerships are emerging to address these pain points. For example, Vodafone’s collaboration with ARM on iSIM (Integrated eUICC) eliminates lengthy connectivity renewal negotiations. Oracle/HERE and Azure/SAP provide streamlined access to location analytics, further simplifying integration.

Addressing the small‑enterprise segment requires a distinct skill set, modular building blocks, and collaborative relationships—no one‑size‑fits‑all solution exists. Successful vendors craft strategic alliances within a rapidly evolving ecosystem to meet these needs.
