Wearable Sensors: 3D‑Printed Skin Tech for Accurate, Mobile Health Monitoring

This month’s Here’s an Idea episode highlighted a number of on-body sensors. Penn State professor Larry Cheng, for example, found a way to 3D-print a sensor directly on the skin (shown in the above image), so measurements requiring close contact, like heart-signal readings, can be made more accurately, even as the wearer actively moves. The printed sensors withstand tepid water for several days, but are easily removed in a hot shower.

Similarly, Yasser Khan and his team from Stanford University created tattoo-like “BodyNet” sensors that adhere to skin, track health indicators, and beam readings to a receiver on a person’s clothing. (Listen to the podcast episode to learn more.)
