Unitika Introduces Sustainable CNF‑Reinforced Polyamide 6

A Japanese company, Unitika, has unveiled a new grade of polyamide 6 that is reinforced with cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). This plant‑derived reinforcement offers a fully recyclable solution for the automotive, home‑appliance, and outdoor‑gear sectors. According to Unitika, the material can be recycled up to three times with no measurable loss in mechanical performance.

Central to the development is the dispersion of high‑load CNFs without the need for chemical modification. The resulting composite matches, and in some respects exceeds, the properties of 30 % glass‑fiber‑reinforced PA6. A 20 % CNF grade shows a density of 1.21 g cm⁻³, a flexural strength of 199 MPa, a flexural modulus of 8.8 GPa, a DTUL of 191 °C, and a coefficient of linear expansion of 7 × 10⁻⁶ °C⁻¹ along the flow direction.

Unitika’s breakthrough positions CNF‑reinforced polyamides as a promising, low‑carbon alternative for high‑performance engineering plastics.
