Soft-Annealed Iridium (Ir) – High-Purity, Heat-Resistant Platinum Group Metal
The brittle, silver-white precious metal material Iridium (Ir) belongs to the heavy platinum metals (density up to 22 g/cm³). It is the most durable of all platinum metals, non-ductile, resistant to oxidation up to 800°C and is not attacked by aqua regia (in the heat it dissolves in concentrated NaCO3-containing hydrochloric acid). Due to its hardness and brittleness, it is hardly deformable, it can be machined and can be limited separated from the gas phase. Application: Iridium is used primarily as a catalyst in the reaction of gases and as a component of very hard alloys for electrical contacts and Füllfederspitzen used for crucibles and thermocouples.
