Preview of Toray Performance Materials at CAMX 2020 – Cutting‑Edge CFRT Carbon Fiber Composites

Toray Performance Materials Corp. (TPMC, Camarillo, Calif., U.S.) is featuring its line of high-performance, high-volume, CFRT brand carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite materials. TPMC is highlighting three application examples of its CFRT materials:

• The Footjoy Pro SL Carbon is a performance footwear application for golf enhanced with the use of Toray CFRT TW-1000 material. Toray’s CFRT TW-1000 style laminate is available in a single-layer construction and is said to combine the benefits of the company’s proprietary thermoplastic polymer matrix with woven carbon and glass fibers in a twill weave for enhanced performance. The material is said to enhance multidirectional movement and is ultra-thin, lightweight and resilient for improved energy return.
• Also within the sports and recreation market, TPMC’s Air Core Composite technology (owned by Inflatable Composites Inc.) is being used to manufacture portable structures made from Toray's patented carbon fiber-reinforced laminates made from Toray’s Cetex TC940 (PET) as a base material. TPMC says the CFRT laminate can be thermally bonded to polymer-coated inflatable membranes and is customizable by optimizing the layup schedule for stress or load requirements for any deployable, portable structure. The laminate’s enhanced rigidity is said to offer improved performance, stowed package size reduction, faster deployability and the ability to add structural attachment points. These products are protected under U.S. Patent 8273427.
• The Toray Prefab is a medical corrective device using Toray CFRT TL-2100. CFRT TL-2100 has more than 30 years of proven performance and is the foremost material for podiatric correction, Toray says. It offers thinness for better fit, functional control and lightweight support and stability for increased comfort. This Toray TL-2100 material is thermoplastic so it is heat adjustable and can be easily customized by doctors for their patients.
