Sumitomo Chemical Launches Advanced LCPs for 5G Cellular and Autonomous Vehicle Applications
Sumitomo Chemical Advanced Technologies (Phoenix, AZ) has introduced two new liquid crystal polymer (LCP) grades—SumikaSuper E6205L and SumikaSuper SR1205L—designed to meet the demanding electrical and environmental requirements of 5G cellular networks and Level 5 vehicle autonomy.
These materials target key components such as high‑speed connectors, interconnect cables, and low‑latency signal paths.
Both thermotropic, injection‑moldable or extrusion‑compatible, polyester‑based LCPs deliver lower dielectric constants than conventional LCPs, enabling higher‑volume, lower‑latency data transfer. SR1205L, built on a novel base chemistry, further reduces dissipation factor (loss tangent), essential for reliable gigahertz‑ and millimeter‑wave transmission.
Sumitomo collaborated with an independent testing laboratory to generate comprehensive performance data across frequencies (1–25 GHz), temperatures (−40 °C to 120 °C), and humidity (up to 100 % RH). Results show stable dielectric constant and superior tensile strength retention compared to standard LCPs, even after 200 hours exposure at 120 °C, 100 % RH, and 2 atm pressure, thanks to enhanced hydrolysis resistance. E6205L exhibits comparable behavior.
Since 1972, Sumitomo has produced polyester‑based LCPs and offers tailored solutions for connector design, providing material selection guidance, data sheets, and hands‑on technical support from design through on‑site molding.
