Aquapak Secures Major Investment from Cibus Enterprise Fund to Scale Hydropol Bioplastic

London‑based private‑equity arm ADM Capital Europe LLP’s Cibus Enterprise Fund has injected a significant capital round into Aquapak Polymers, a UK‑based specialist in biodegradable biopolymers. The funding will accelerate the development and commercial roll‑out of Aquapak’s flagship product, the Hydropol bioplastic.

Hydropol is a water‑soluble, non‑toxic polymer derived from polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH). Industry data shows it is roughly three times stronger than comparable biodegradable plastics, while still offering easy processing into films, laminates and injection‑molded parts. Its robust low‑temperature solubility and high barrier properties enable a broader range of applications than many existing bioplastics.

When inadvertently released into the environment, Hydropol dissolves and biodegrades, leaving no residue. Current products include garment bags, organic waste disposal bags, and laundry bags for infection control. The material’s solubility simplifies recycling streams, reducing the confusion that often accompanies mixed‑material packaging.

Under development are a suite of high‑profile applications: sandwich boxes, dried pet‑food packaging, snack and convenience‑food wrappers, cooked‑meat packaging, a range of e‑commerce delivery solutions, and a non‑woven fiber for wet wipes. Aquapak is partnering with DS Smith, Innovate UK and eight universities worldwide to unlock these new uses.

Cibus sees the food and beverage sector as the most urgent arena for sustainable packaging. The firm’s investment aligns with its mission to drive resource efficiency across the food value chain, marking the first capital injection into the sustainable packaging space.

Alastair Cooper, Head of Venture Investing, ADM Capital Europe said, "The Cibus Enterprise Fund backs disruptive food technologies, and with Aquapak we identify a company capable of transforming food packaging by improving its end‑of‑life. Aquapak’s customers share a global vision for more sustainable solutions."

Mark Lapping, CEO, Aquapak added, "We are delighted to welcome Cibus as a new investor at this pivotal moment. With their support we will accelerate Hydropol’s evolution into a platform technology, delivering truly circular economy packaging solutions to the global food sector and beyond over the coming years."
