Tony Nutile’s Nylon Spool & Carbon‑Fiber Tool Rack for Mark One Printers
Tony Nutile leads Mark One printer support at Markforged, where he routinely prints to troubleshoot issues and evaluate software or hardware updates. During this work, he identified two recurring needs: a compact, ready‑to‑use spool for testing short lengths of continuous carbon fiber, Kevlar™, and fiberglass, and a dedicated space to keep the Mark One’s most frequently used tools.
Using TinkerCAD, Tony designed two practical accessories that solve both problems.
1. Nylon Test Spool – A 100 mm diameter, 21 mm high spool made from nylon, ideal for rapid testing of new fiber runs and for creating a symmetrical look with other composite material wheels.
2. Mini Tool Rack – A 160.5 mm × 78 mm × 32.29 mm rack that houses the glue stick, tweezers, Allen wrench and leveling shims. It keeps essential tools within arm’s reach, ensuring the build plate is always glued and leveled before each print.
The nylon spool serves as a spare or test spool, allowing Tony to quickly swap in a fresh fiber load without changing the main spool.
The tool rack sees frequent use, as Tony typically finishes two to three parts daily. By keeping the glue stick, tweezers, Allen wrench, and shims at hand, the rack reminds him to prepare the bed properly and maintain accurate leveling, which is crucial for high‑quality prints.
The rack is reinforced with carbon fiber. Markforged’s slicer automatically adjusts the print settings to optimize reinforcement placement, while a tooltip suggests slicing parameters that preserve fine details and dimensional accuracy.
Both accessories are available on Thingiverse, making them accessible to the wider community.
