Markforged Holiday Highlights: 2016’s Key Achievements & Global Growth

Throughout 2016, we focused on eliminating the obstacles that separate concept from production, empowering engineers to produce high‑strength, finished parts with the optimal materials. By launching three new printer models and two advanced materials, we helped our customers create parts that rival metal in strength and finish. Our global footprint grew dramatically, and we couldn’t have reached these milestones without the invaluable support, feedback, and partnership of our customers and resellers. We’re grateful to share these highlights.

1. Our New Product Line

At the beginning of 2016, we introduced the Mark Two, building on the Mark One’s foundation with significant feature upgrades. The Mark Two established a dependable, high‑strength printing platform that underpinned all subsequent releases. Its reliability enabled the Mark X’s larger build volume and precision laser scanning, and it served as the core of the integrated Onyx system.

2. Onyx Material Release

In June, we launched Onyx—our chopped‑carbon‑fiber filament that delivers a refined, professional finish and exceptional stiffness. Even our engineers are impressed by its performance, and customers report immediate market‑ready parts. Alan Rencher of Media Blackout said, “It’s helping us produce sellable parts straight out of the printer; I don’t think we’ll ever look back.” Onyx is now offered across our full product range, beginning with the Onyx One as the gateway to high‑strength 3D printing.

3. BattleBots Sponsorship

In 2016, we proudly sponsored two of ABC’s BattleBots—Overhaul and SawBlaze—demonstrating the resilience of Markforged parts in extreme conditions. Builders Charles Guan and Jamison Go, who have 3D‑printed several combat robots, noted, “When I take this robot to competitions, the audience is amazed that it’s 3D‑printed. I explain that it’s built with a Markforged printer.” Their experiences reinforce how our high‑strength printers empower creators in the robotics arena.

4. STS Turbo on the Discovery Channel

Early September, the Mark Two was featured on Discovery Channel’s Blue Collar Backers, spotlighting its impact on custom turbocharger manufacturing. Founder Rick Squires of STS Turbo demonstrated how the printer produces lightweight, high‑resistance turbo components on demand, eliminating the need for costly inventory. “It’s a game‑changer,” he said. 5. Growing Recognition

Our community, customers, and partners have been integral to every milestone this year. The company’s workforce has more than doubled, and our global user base now spans every continent. We’re grateful for the stories shared by Olin College BAJA students, Katowice Beverages employees, and many others. Media coverage—from a comprehensive review of the Mark Two by Develop3D to a TechCrunch Crunchie nomination and a Digital Engineering Product of the Week feature—has amplified our reach and reinforced our reputation as a technology leader.

Looking ahead, we remain excited about the opportunities ahead. Thank you to our customers, resellers, and fans for making 2016 a resounding success. To express our appreciation, we’ve included a holiday ornament you can print and share. Download the file here.
