AMFG 2019: Milestones & Innovations Driving Additive Manufacturing Forward
2019 was a pivotal year for additive manufacturing, marked by significant innovations that advanced the industry toward mainstream adoption.
For AMFG, it was also a year of growth, expanding our MES solutions and solidifying our position as a leader in the AM ecosystem.
January – Developing AI & Machine Learning for AM
We secured Innovate UK funding to enhance our MES platform with AI and machine‑learning capabilities. This research focuses on two critical areas: 1) refining quality‑assurance processes to guarantee part integrity, and 2) optimizing production scheduling through predictive analytics and dynamic workflow management. These tools are essential as the industry shifts toward serial production.
February – Expanding to Germany

We opened a new office in Munich, placing us at the heart of Germany’s advanced AM community. This expansion brings us closer to customers and enables us to support the scaling of AM operations across Europe.
April – Publishing the First Additive Manufacturing Landscape
The industry’s rapid evolution demands clear visibility. In April, we released our inaugural Additive Manufacturing Landscape infographic and a comprehensive whitepaper that dissected each market segment. Explore our findings here for a deep dive into current trends.
May – AMFG Named IDC Innovator for 3D Printing Workflow Solutions

Recognizing the growing role of software in streamlining AM workflows, IDC honored AMFG as one of four innovators in 3D printing workflow solutions. IDC described us as offering “innovative solutions that could accelerate growth and market impact.”
July – Publishing Our First State of the Industry Report
Our 36‑page State of the Industry report focused on the 3D printing service bureau market, a sector poised for rapid growth. An EY study projected that nearly one‑third of all companies would use service providers for AM parts by 2022. Our survey of global service bureaus revealed a competitive yet expanding landscape.
September – Exploring Digitalisation in AM
At the TCT Show in Birmingham, SVP Nico Bruel emphasized, “You can’t have traceability in additive manufacturing without data.” He highlighted the transformative role of MES software in delivering repeatability, traceability, agility, and connectivity across the AM workflow.
October – Exploring AM Around the World at the AM Summit 2019
Senior Marketing Manager Victoria Akinsowon joined a panel at the AM Summit, hosted by the Danish AM Hub. The discussion examined global developments, noting that while the US and Europe dominate the market, emerging regions promise significant future impact.
November – Announcing Partnerships with EOS and Autodesk
At Formnext, the largest AM trade show, we announced two pivotal partnerships:
- EOS: Together we’re building a fully connected, automated workflow that allows users to interface directly with machines through our platform.
- Autodesk: Integration of Netfabb® and Fusion 360® with our MES software will enable seamless file preparation and production management.
More collaborations are on the horizon—stay tuned for upcoming announcements.
December – Celebrating Our Expert Interviews Series
We concluded 2019 with our final Expert Interview, continuing a series that brings industry voices to the forefront. Highlights included insights from Carbon, Fortify, 3DEO, Solvay, Ford Motor Company, and Dunlop Systems on scaling production, material innovations, and in‑house adoption.
